Daniel Day-Lewis and his wife, Rebecca Miller! They are the proud recipients of the "Worst Dressed Couple" award! (the crowd roars!)
The catagory could also be titled "What the heck were they thinkin'?" Daniel wore a sloppy looking black tuxedo that was ill-fitted, the pants were miles too long, and he wore brown suede loafers, the kind you would wear on Saturday afternoon to run to the store, not the Academy Awards! Rebecca's dress just,... I don't know, it defied explanation, really. It was a combination of different elements that did not belong together. She wore a gown with a black velvet bodice adorned with jewel-like flowers the size of donuts that went down the front, the shoulders had bright red straps with big bows, the sleeves and skirt were made of black floral lace, sewn over a silver gray colored material, and her shoes were black and white checkered pumps,...(I think I threw up a little in my mouth). Seriously, the designer was playing a practical joke, there just is no other explanation!
Okay,...I've had my fun! (a frustrated fashion designer, me thinks!)
So, did you all watch the Oscars or the pre-Oscar shows? I did catch a little of the Barbara Walter's Special, which, wasn't really all that special as far as I could tell. I also watched Regis Philbin on the Red Carpet, and he was just down right annoying! He was screaming into the microphone to be heard over the noise of the crowd, and then couldn't hear and was misunderstanding what the people he was interviewing were saying to him. I watched the beginning of the Oscars because I like Jon Stewart, and he was funny, but that was about it!
I do wonder why we all (myself included) are so fascinated by the rich and famous? I mean, I admire their acting ability, the writers are talented, producers, cinematographers, etc., but what makes them any more special than say, a heart surgeon? I admire someone intelligent and skillful who holds the lives of people, literally, in their hands. So, why aren't we lined up around hospitals waiting to take their picture or see what they're wearing?
It was interesting, I was watching MTV the other day with my younger son. He was watching My Sweet Sixteen. It's a show about a girl or boy turning sixteen and the party that their parents throw for them. Now, I'm not talking about renting a DJ and springing for some pizza, okay? This girl's parents threw her a party to the tune of $100,000.00. They also bought her a new sports car for her birthday present, and took her shopping for the perfect dress to wear to her party, made by a designer, that cost $10,000.00. Did I mention she is SIXTEEN years old? That is more money than most people spend on a wedding or wedding gown! Heck, that's more than most people earn in a year! And the little darling's reaction to all of this opulence? She was completely dissatisfied. This wasn't big enough, that wasn't the right color, the food was all wrong, etc. I was watching this thinking to myself what a spoiled brat this girl was, and waiting to see what my son's reaction would be. You know what? I was really proud of him! He said, "Wow! I can't believe how spoiled she is! Her parents are trying so hard to make her happy and spending so much money on her, and she doesn't appreciate it." I nodded in agreement. He went on to say, "What a waste of money for one stupid party! They should save that money and use it to pay for her college, or give it to her to buy a house when she's grown up." (That's my boy!) I told him how proud I was that he understood this, and that in life you have to work for what you have, and even if it's not millions of dollars, you should appreciate it and be proud of yourself. Just when you think they're not paying attention, they surprise you!
Now if I can just make him understand why he can't have a plasma tv, his own laptop computer, an i-phone, Air Jordan limited shoes,.... Maybe he'll become an actor or a screen writer one day and attend the Academy Awards. Then he can invite his 'ol mom to be his date! (it could happen!) You know I'll be wearing something FABULOUS, 'cause I don't want you all talking about my dress!

I have seen that sweet sixteen show and it makes me a little sick. These parents are nuts and the kids? Are spoiled rotten.
I love watching the celebrities too. I just spent a half hour surfing People.com looking at the photos.
:-)
Oh, I have seen that show. It is sick. Yes? Wht exactly is the purpose and can you imagine the kids watching. So sad. YUCK!
Sorry I missed the outfits...uh, I mean awards :) I need to go look up Daniel Day-Lewis and his wife so I can see how bad it was :) I would have liked to see Jon Stewart too!
Yes-the Sweet Sixteen show is pretty bad, its so horrible to watch. I really don't get the premise of the show...just how spoiled and bratty can you get? There is always drama because the kid is just never satisfied. It's sad, because they'll probably be like that the rest of their lives, never appreciating anything they have.
Hope your having a good Monday! We survived our doctor's appt-just a minor meltdown at the end with lots of foot stomping :) No more afternoon appts for me-what was I thinking?
Oh Lizzy, Lizzy, I have seen you here and there and have constantly wanted to stop by, but something (Big Daddy) always seemed to take my attention away. Well, now that he is at work, and I can visit, I wanted to say thanks for coming on over. I wanted to watch the Oscars but someone (Big Daddy) wanted to watch the Simpson's. I did see Kathryn Heigal and ooo la la she looked hot.
lizzy,
thanks for the overview. i missed it all but now i don't even feel the need to watch ET. thanks for filling me in!
I am so glad I don't have cable so I wouldn't be tempted to watch that kind of a train wreck. I just...that is incredibly stupid. And I'm not even saying that because I'm jealous :)! I had to work today so I didn't see all that much of the Oscars, but I thought Keri Russell looked BEAUTEMOUS, and Katherine Heigl as well!
I haven't seen that show, but you should be very proud of your kid!
ohhh Lizzy... i think that kitty in the pics Diana sent me are not of a bob cat thats a HUGE mountain LION...we have bob cats around here they are not much bigger than a wild house cat (we have some pretty big ones here, wild house cats that is) I have seen one bob cat here several years ago it would come to the edge of the woods but not close to the house.
Thanks for the reassurance that we are not a bunch of nuts in my house ... its good to know that others suffer the same things LOL.
cables messing up already i am not sure how long before it messes up completely... hubby is threatening to rip it from the poles outside and get satelite... i said i WILL DIE without internet so will have to do some searching for whats available out here as bell south says dsl wont be out here for another 10 years OMG what to do... ok best run before cable goes completely out!
HUGS

Lizzie you are too funny! You would be a very fashion forward Oscar Momma!
I hear ya about the spoiled kids, my Hubby and I were talking about this after the swim bday party on Saturday... the bday girl was complaining because they forgot some sort of decoration...ok, this place was packed with decorations, you couldn't see through the swarm of balloons. Then they put gold coins on the table, not the kind you open with chocolate in them, but coins, ya know for kids to throw at each other, a package of bubbles on the tables, ya know so kids can blow bubbles inside (a crowded room) anyways, bubbles were spilled, pop was spilled, the room was chaos and the topping on the cake...the bday girl opened about every gift with no enthusiasm or excitement, she already had this or that...oh gee thanks... it was so fake. AND because I knew this was the way it would be I can proudly say I didn't waste my time and money...I bought an $8 gift and called it good. My 2 oldest hand her the gift and she looks at them and says and I quote..."Oh, you both got me one gift!" AS IF!!! What is with the spoiled brats of our world. This is why I am thankful she lives on the other side of the street, bummer she has to ride the bus. UGH.
I am very proud of your son for getting it! He gets it!
That has to feel great Lizzy!
I didn't really watch the awards. I don't even know any of the movies (I never get out) so I really don't care. And I completely agree with you, what makes these stars any more important that a heart surgeon, or someone trying to find a cure for cancer?
Answer? NOTHING.
They aren't even close to being in the same league. They are entertainment. That is IT. But we treat them like they are saving the world. Yeah, this is definitely a mixed-up world (to put it mildly).
And that sweet sixteen show? sick. But honestly, the more over the top the party, the more bratty and unappreciative the recipient, the better the ratings. Right? But unfortunately, they are definitely setting an extremely poor example for our young ones.
Your boy sounds like he has head on straight. You are doing a good job!!!
Lizzy, I don't get it either. We don't have MTV, but I've seen that show and actually like it. BUT, I like what your son said about it even more!
LIzzy,
I don't really get into the Oscars, but I did catch bits and pieces of the show. I have never seen sweet sixteen, but from the sounds of it I wouldn't like it.
Hope you have a good day.
Steph
