I Can't Help Myself

My husband and I were walking through a store the other day. I was glancing at all the different displays of clothing, jewelry, housewares, bath and body lotions and potions,..you name it! As I walked by each counter or display I would make a comment. "Oh, that's a cute sweater." or "Those towels would look nice in the boy's bathroom." That kind of thing. Now, had I been shopping by myself, I would have thought these things, I just wouldn't have said them out loud. (I haven't quite gotten to the crazy stage of talking out loud to myself in public) However, since my husband was with me, I said these things, as a way of making conversation and to see if he agreed with my assessment of these items. (Well, maybe to see if he'd spring for the sweater that I thought was cute, too,..but he didn't!) Anyway,..after a few of these casual comments he turned to me and said, "Do you honestly evaluate every single thing that you see? Can't you just walk through the store, ignore all of the stuff you aren't here to buy, and get to what we are here for?" (Huh?) *blink-blink* "What do you mean?" I asked. "Let's just get the card and gift bag that we came for and get out of here." he said. Hmmm. I thought about this for a moment. "Well, it's not as if I'm going to buy them all, you know." I say a little defensively. "Good!" was his response. He laughed. I rolled my eyes. "You're no fun!" I replied. "If this is what you consider fun, I'd hate to see what you find boring!" he retorted. (Oh, he is so NOT funny!) And, the correct response to that statement should have been "Nascar", however, I didn't think of it until afterwards when we were driving home. (Where's my razor sharp wit when I need it?!) Dang!

So, here is my question to you. Do you walk directly into a store, making a beeline for the item(s) which you plan to purchase? Or, do you glance, touch, and notice other items along the way to the item you plan to purchase? Also, do you end up buying other things which you hadn't planned on, or do you stick to the list at hand? I'm purely curious, there is no right or wrong answer here, just wondering if I'm alone in my shopping spectator sport, or if I have some company. I actually do a little of both, if I'm being perfectly honest. I don't buy everything I see or admire, however, I have been known to walk out of the store with a few extra items I hadn't planned on purchasing. I can't help myself!

We go in planning to buy 2-3 items which should cost about 20.oo and come out 156.oo later. I have no idea how the crap gets into my cart or for that matter, who put it there. I think there are shopping gnomes that sneak around my cart and add items periodically.

I'd tell them to stop if I could find them.

morning lizzy,

i look at way to many things and then buy things that i shouldn't. in order to prevent this from happening, i really don't shop that often. that is, unless one of us really needs something.

walmart and target seem to get me in trouble, as i buy stuff that i don't even need. then of course, anne taylor loft.... well it's my favorite store and if i go in, i will come out with something that's just been marked down.

i am staying clear of stores at least for a few more weeks!!!

btw, i think you owe to yourself to go back and get the sweater!

Well considering I LOVE Nascar you may not like my answer! ;) I hate to shop when I don't have money! I love to shop when I have money! I am in and out when I have to get something, and as much as I love to browse and say oh that would look great here or there it just pisses me off that I can't have it so I don't do much window shopping. LOL! I also tend to come home with way more than I went for every time I go so I try to stay out of stores as much as possible! :)

This story about your shopping trip could have been me and my husband! I love to shop. I don't buy everything that I see, but I have been known to come out with things that I did not go in for. I have been know to stop for a quick trip to the store and end up getting lost!

It is very rare that I can ever get in and get out of a store for just one thing. I ALWAYS have to glance at a few things :) Some times I'll even fill my cart up and then back track to take it all out! ha ha ha Yeah, I guess there's never a quick trip with me!

Nascar all the way Lizzie~ Boring!

I am one of those shoppers that can pass up a full price cute item, but if it is a deal~ it's in the cart. Therefore I try and stay out of the store as much as possible. I try and stick to my list, but it is bound to happen, I always come home with more. I have been working on this lately though, I make a list, go through the sale fliers and clip my coupons, after taking the time to do that in order to save money I try and remind myself when I am in the store holding something that is ONLY $2 that it would take about 5 coupons to save that and I don't want to spend anymore time clipping that I have to. I am trying to get the groceries under control around here, the holidays hit hard this year. Ugh. It's not as much fun.

I tend to shop the sale things for the kids for next year...I have actually done pretty well with this. It works for me because I have a child in each size... so no matter what it will fit or work for somebody. We get a lot of things handed down to us too though since we moved back here, so my shopping for the kids has really slowed down. Wow, this is getting long. Do you shop online? I wondered how many people do that.

Girl I am just like you. I love to glance at stuff, make comments. I just love shopping period. Men are buttheads and they hate to shop, unless it's Lowes. Now I am sorry but how can you LIKE to shop at Lowe's. I like the decoartive stuff but my husband like to look at wood and doors and crap. BORING!

I always leave a store with more than I planned on purchasing. It is a real problem! I can't go into Wal-mart or Target without spending at least $100.00! It drives my husband CRAZY!!!! I need to put blinders on when I go into a clothing store or shoe store, otherwise I'm just out of control!

You are not alone, my friend!

I do exactly the same thing as you and I love it. But I do always come home with way more than I planned.

Ooops!

:-)

Boring would be going in and getting only what's on the list!

I try very, very hard to make a beeline.

But I plan our purchases very carefully, and "going directly to what you want" requires you to know what you want. So before the "beeline" trip, I've usually made several evaluating trips or online stops to find the perfect one.

Umm, I'd say I'm just like you, and my husband is just like yours! In fact, it sounded like a conversation my husband and I would be having! Maybe you and I should go shopping together!

LaskiGal said...

I do both! Most definitely. I'm a big bargain hunter and coupon user, so I usually only get what I can get for a steal (if it isn't on the list).

I'm with you on the making conversation. I just voice my mind and my hubby reacts in a similar way as your hubby does. I told him it is just my stream of consciousness and that he should be honored to have such valuable insights into my mind . . . my soul. Unfortunately, he doesn't buy it. Darn it.

Oh shopping!!! I have a whole hatful of shopping M.O.'s--just depends on why I'm shopping in the first place. Bill LOVED to shop; I know, how lucky was I! But I soon learned I needed to be careful about saying I liked something, because two days later he would go back and buy it for me. I never could get him convinced that some things, just because I liked them did not mean I wanted them! That was just the way he was, so I finally learned to stop saying I liked some stuff :)! I mean, how cool is that anyway; he was really something! Now, if there are a couple of things I NEED, I just like to run in and get what I need and run back out again. By myself. If there are a few things I need, I still like to go by myself, and I'll probably look around at other things, too. Which I may or may not buy. I only like to shop with other people when I don't really need anything. Then it's all up for grabs--HAHA! Or if I'm in Target--which is a real problem for me. Once I get in Target, apparently I need everything I see :). And shopping online is a whole other deal; why, that just doesn't count at all!!! Some things I just love buying online and having it arrive right at my door.

And now I wanna go shopping. Wanna go with me Lizzy? Let's go get your sweater! :)

MamaGeek said...

Tis true - guys come in only one model. THAT sounds too familiar!

I do a little of both. Although it it's fairly expensive I'll have researched it online first.

Go get that sweater!

my husband and I have had that conversation so many times! He just does not understand the art of just browsing :) I honestly do not go shopping that much, as I really do hate to shop, BUT when I do venture in, I like to see what I am missing! It doesn't mean I will buy more then I need (but sometimes it does) I just like to see what I am missing, or if there is something I need but didn't know it

I laughed at this post Lizzy. I am sure my DH and I have had this exact same conversation. It drives him crazy because I like to reach out at touch things and so do the kids which means they turn on every button of every loud annoying toy down the toy isle. Hey they come by it hionestly ;-)

Oh. I touch everything. So much better then online shopping.

I am seething with jealousy here in poopie Ohio knowing that you are shopping in posh Chicago.

Seething.

I can't ever get out of Target without dropping $100. It's one of those stores that I have to walk completely around to check out all the new and marked down stuff.

Hello. My name is Marie and I'm a shop-a-holic.

if I have kids with me it is beeline, if I am alone, I meander just like you do. I love browsing and if I don't have kids why not take my time.

I DO though talk to myself in public, really, quite embarrasing, but I am a fun person to talk to ;)

First I never ever never ever ever shop with Husband .. ever .. and yes I do look at everything and I do mentally comment .. when with gal pals we comment to one another .. and you know now that I am thinking about it I am understanding why I see so many women on their cellphones while they are shopping!

My first time stopping by. LOL!! My husband HATES to shop with me. He went with me purse shopping one time several years ago. Bad idea. He vowed NEVER to do that again.

I tend to agree with Pam's comments very closely and i think a lot of commentary to myself - once in a while it slips out - when I'm alone.

Oops.

oh gosh honey... if me and you went shopping we would take forever, cause i do the exact same thing... feel, look, evaluate, consider, sometimes even smell... i always buy way too much unless i say nothing but whats on the list.. which is rare !
